The valleys and plains of this ecoregion extend along the coast of an ancient land known as Illyria, which includes the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. Today, this is a populated countryside that is subject to political and military strife. Native vegetation exists in fragments. Despite these challenges, however, a rich variety of plants and animals manage to survive.
