Shigella sonnei is a species of Shigella. Together with Shigella flexneri, it is responsible for 90% of shigellosis. Shigella sonnei is named for the Danish bacteriologist Carl Olaf Sonne. It is a gram negative, bacillus, non-motile, non-spore forming bacterium.
