Wikipedia Abstract

Pinus oocarpa is a species of pine tree native to Mexico and Central America. It is the national tree of Honduras, where it is known as Ocote. Common names include pino amarillo, pino avellano, Mexican yellow pine, and hazelnut pine. It appears that it was the progenitor (original) species that served as the ancestor for some of the other pines of Mexico.

Mexico: from the Sierra Madre Occidental SE to Mesoamerica, in S Sonora, Sinaloa, SW Durango, Nayarit, S Zacatecas, Jalisco, Michoacán, México, Distrito Federal, Hidalgo, N Puebla, Morelos, Tlaxcala, Guerrero, Oaxaca, S Veracruz and Chiapas; widespread in the highlands of Guatemala, in Honduras, El Salvador and NW Nicaragua. Reports (Critchfield & Little, 1966; Perry, 1991) of P. oocarpa from Belize are here considered to refer to P. tecunumanii.
